Physicals & Health Info
Physicals
PHYSICAL EXAM: The district requires a physical exam upon entrance to the school district. This exam must be within 12 months prior to registration. (policy JHCA)
PHYSICALS FOR SPORTS: If your child wishes to try out for any athletic team at LMS or LHS, he or she must have a current physical exam on file in their health record. A physical examination is considered current if done after March 1st of the year the student enters middle school or high school. (If you are unable to comply with the March 1st date, please call the nurse's office or the LHS athletic office, 432-6941, ext 2306, to discuss other options).
A copy of this exam must be on file in the student's health record before tryouts begin.
Emergency Contact Updates
Please notify us if there are any changes in your work, home, cell phone or emergency contact person's phone numbers, so that you may be reached in case of an emergency.
Asthma
Students that attend our school may have asthma. We appreciate an update at the start of the school year if there have been changes over the summer and we like to learn about new students as well. Many of our students keep doctor ordered inhalers in the nurses office. Some of our older students with parent and physician permission, keep their rescue inhalers with them (self-carry). The physician needs to indicate the self-carry on the MD order form; many doctors use their own forms. A district self-carry contract also needs to be completed. Our form can be found HERE.
Diabetes
Some students that attend our schools have diabetes. We always appreciate an update at the start of the school year and we like to learn about students new to us as well. Students often keep back up supplies in "bins" in a cabinet in the nurses office and keep a few supplies with them as well.
District policy does require a yearly physician order for all the medications. Many physicians use their own forms. Their orders include the care and indications for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Pediculosis typically affects children who are in direct contact with one another or who share personal items, such as brushes, hats, or scarves. Symptoms include itching of the scalp, visible lice on the scalp, and lice eggs (nits) on the hair shafts.
Londonderry School District has a no nit and pediculosis policy. Student's found to have pediculosis (head lice) by the school nurse will need to be picked up from school, treated with a lice treatment(medicated shampoos specific for lice), thorough nit removal at home by using a metal nit comb or picking nits out by hand which may take several days to remove all nits.
Nursing directs you through this process by providing information, showing you what a nits(eggs), possibly a louse(bug) if your child has one looks like, and how to remove nits and louse the hair. After the student is treated for lice at home, and you have completed thorough daily checks with nit removal, we will schedule a time for your child to come in for a check with the school nurse.
The scheduled head check may take up to 45 minutes or more depending on the thickness and length of the hair. The student's hair needs to be clean and completely dry. A parent or guardian must stay with the student until the check is completed. The school nurse has the discretion if further treatment or nit removal at home is warranted in addition to another check prior to clearing the student to return to school. Once the student is cleared to return to school please continue checks daily at home, have your child wear their hair up or braided if their hair is long, nursing will also pull your student for periodic checks for a determined length of time, and if further nits or lice are found the student will be sent home again to restart the process.
With a case of lice and exposure to the classroom, nursing may complete a pediculosis check of the homeroom class and a pediculosis letter will be sent home with the students in the class so families may check their student periodically at home. The infected student's name will be kept confidential, and we ask that parents remind their children not to question peers or try to figure out who contracted lice.
Tips for a Successful Day at School
Ensure that your child is getting plenty of sleep. For ages 6 through 11 our children require 9-11 hours of sleep each night.
Start the day with healthy breakfast.
Pack a refillable water bottle so your child may remain hydrated throughout the day.
Pack extra snacks for snack time and just in case your child may require an additional snack. Our students are growing and during times of growth they tend to be hungrier.
For elementary students, consider having a change of clothing for your child in their back pack in the event they to change.
As seasons change ensure your child is dressed for the weather. For elementary students, during the winter please make sure your child has boots, snow gear (snow pants and a jacket), hat, and gloves. Students must have all gear to play in the snow. At the middle school level, students go outside for PE classes, snow shoe and sled. Please have them bring appropriate attire for PE class.
At the elementary level, for gym days, make sure that they are wearing socks and sneakers or pack these if they are wearing different shoes. Older students need proper foot attire on PE days as well.
